Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural (SMSC)

We have a broad and balanced curriculum which provides opportunities for effective SMSC development.

SMSC is promoted throughout the wider curriculum (please see topic plans on the Humanities page) and in PSHE, regular assemblies, lessons and school activities such as fundraising, celebrations of special festivals and events in the global calendar and links with the wider community. Children are also given the opportunity to prepare well for life in modern Britain through attending a wide range of community events such as The Primary Careers Conference, The RE Youth Conference, Steps to Success City University, Little Architect workshops and Debate Mate events.

British Values

Democracy is embedded at the school.  Pupils are always listened to by adults and are taught to listen carefully and with concern to each other, respecting the right of every individual to have their opinions and voices heard.

The Rule of Law

The importance of laws whether they are those that govern the class, the school or the country, are consistently reinforced throughout our school day, through our school assemblies and also when dealing with behaviour in school.

Individual Liberty

Within school, pupils are actively encouraged to make choices, knowing that they are in a safe and supportive environment.  As a school we educate and provide boundaries for our pupils to make choices safely, through the provision of a safe environment and an empowering education.

Mutual Respect

At the heart of our whole school ethos is a commitment to the 3 'Bs' - Be Ready, Be Respectful, Be Safe– a set of core values that we believe contribute to individuals being able to live happy and successful lives within the communities to which they belong. Our values are taught through assemblies and PSHE sessions and form a key part of our daily dialogue across school.

Tolerance of Those with Different Faiths and Beliefs

Our core value of Respect ensures tolerance of those who have different faiths and beliefs.  Hugh Myddelton Primary School enhances pupils understanding of different faiths and beliefs through religious education studies; PSHE work; welcoming visitors from other schools, partnership with an International School and enjoying a depth of study during themed weeks.

Our culture of debate and questioning is embedded within each lesson, subject and topic, specific examples of which can be viewed by clicking on the images below.
